Meet the artist taking aim at the art establishment

You’ve heard of fake news – but up-and-coming artist CB Hoyo is bringing fake art  to the masses.

The Cuban painter, who is just 22, will open his first London show in February at Imitate Modern, taking aim at the art establishment right in the heart of Mayfair.

Hoyo recreates the work of artists such as Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mark Rothko and Vincent van Gogh, and then writes over them with his own text.

He has emblazoned his versions of classic works of art with words including ‘This Fake Haring Will Make My Art Collection Great Again’ and ‘Keeping It Real With My Fake Basquiat’.

Hoyo’s work has attracted a younger generation of collectors thanks to his popular Instagram, with Dua Lipa one of his famous fans.

His work questions the monetary value of art in a time when collectors pay high prices for works by certain artists. He has previously said that “the moment man realized he could make money just by making art was the moment art stopped being just art.”

In addition to painting, he also creates street art, murals and installations.

CH Hoyo: Keeping It Real is at Imitate Modern from February 8-28
